Ayurveda is the oldest healing system originating in India about 5,000 years ago. Translated from Sanskrit as the wisdom of life, it is considered a sister-science to yoga, originating from a similar ancient philosophy.
It is a complete system of health and healing that utilizes food and lifestyle choices to promote a balanced body, mind, and spirit. Perfect health can be understood as living in harmony with our environment.
We are able to know and experience life through our senses. When the qualities of what we take in through our five senses complement our inherent nature, then our body and mind are balanced.
Ayurveda addresses the root cause of imbalances in the body and mind.
The five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and either are the building blocks of all creation. These elements formulate our mind/body type and everything that we take in through our five senses. Getting to know the qualities of these elements supports us in understanding our nature, and finding balance within our environments and ourselves.
A simple Ayurvedic concept is: Like increases like, and opposites create balance. What’s fascinating about Ayurveda is that we are all already practicing without even realizing it! In the winter-time, when it is cold and dry, we tend to crave warm, oily foods. During the summer, when it is hot outside, we tend to crave more cooling foods and activities, like salads and swimming. These are examples of our bodies working to find balance and create harmony. Ayurveda simply gives a name and understanding to these practices and deepens our connection to our circadian rhythms and helps us to see and understand our relationship to nature without the noise of our fast society and technology.
One simple way to do this is to eat seasonally. The earth provides us with exactly what we need: heavy, root vegetables in the winter time to ground us from the rough and dryness of the season, bitter, astringent greens in the spring time to shed the heaviness from winter, and an abundance of cooling fruits and vegetables in the summertime to combat the heat. We have made this practice simple with our seasonally appropriate self-care line. Uplifting and grounding body oils, tea blends and spice blends to allow us to harmonize with each season.
Ayurveda offers practical lifestyle choices that promote a strong immune system, digestion, stress, mental health, and sleep so that we can live our best life.
This is accomplished by incorporating daily routines, engaging in appropriate exercise, getting quality sleep, eating with the seasons, slowing down, and eating mind-fully. These are just a few of the examples from a comprehensive system of healing.
On a personal note, Ayurveda has supported all of us here at Farmtrue, which is why our ghee-based company was created. We have seen the profound impact Ayurveda has had on our own lives, and want to share this wisdom.
