Manage stress by managing energy

One of the 3 Pillars of Health in Ayurveda is management of our energy. We can observe how much energy we exert in terms of work, sex, lifestyle, and personal commitments; from there, we can implement routines to replenish ourselves and recover from stress to prepare for future energy expenditure.

Nourishing food and self-care practices assist the body in preparing for and recovering from stress. In particular, we’re looking to nourish and build “ojas”. “Ojas” is simply a Sanskrit term for a strong body and immune system, a stable mind, and the ability to withstand stress. It is vitality, resilience, radiance, and a positive outlook on life.  Physically, it is the essence of all vital bodily fluids.

So much of our time is spent being busy, rushing around, working, caring for others and depleting our energy. No matter what is going on in our life, we can access tools through food and lifestyle choices that will support, build and replenish our Ojas.

What depletes Ojas?

Lifestyle: Multi-tasking, sensory overload, excessive sexual activity, over-exercising, and chronic stress.

Food: A diet high in processed foods, refined sugars.

Tips to Restore Ojas

  • Incorporate stress reducing foods into your diet that are nutrient dense, whole foods:

Warm, grounding, oily, heavy foods such as ghee, almonds, sesame seeds, dates, warm milk, ginger, turmeric, sweet potatoes, avocados, cream of wheat, raw whole milk with saffron or cardamom, basmati rice, legumes, oatmeal, bananas, spinach, leafy greens.

  • Avoid processed foods and refined sugars
  • Allow time to slow down and rest
  • Get regular exercise, but not too excessive as this can be upsetting to your state of balance. Walking and yoga are great options.
  • Nourish your senses with nature and the arts
  • Get adequate sleep
  • Take a break from social media and long hours on the computer
  • Reduce or avoid sexual activity
  • Spend time with loved ones
  • Practice self-love ☺
  • Breathe
